27million Lines At Risk As NCC Disconnects Unregistered SIMs Today

27million Lines At Risk As NCC Disconnects Unregistered SIMs Today

If you are reading this and you have not registered your phone line(s), it may just be almost late. In fact, you need not wonder why you may neither receive nor complete any calls from today.
This is because the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, says the collation, harmonisation and authentication of the subscriber’s identification modules, SIMs card registration it embarked upon in conjunction with all the telecom operators in Nigeria, since 2011, ends today, and those whose numbers were not captured will be disconnected.
For the past two years, the industry regulator (NCC) has embarked on a massive campaign, sensitizing telephone subscribers on the need to register their phones to enable a proper record of subscribers in the country, effective monitoring of telecommunications activities and cut down on phone-related crimes.
The regulator also made it clear that after a six-month period which expires on September 2011, those who did not register their lines stood the risk of losing them by deactivation. However, following the panic, tension and anxiety as the exercise came to an end, the Commission allowed a grace period by asking people who had not registered to go to their operators to do so while it was collating, harmonising and authenticating the data already gathered.
The harmonisation and authentication exercise have taken over one year and the NCC, a few months back, declared that on June 30, 2013, all unregistered lines would be deactivated. Tension in the industry is at its height. This also reflects the growing nature of Nigerian telecom industry and the intrigues which heralded the exercise, March 2011 when it was flagged off.
As at Thursday, about 27 million SIMs out of the 164 million connected lines and 119 million active were said to be still unregistered. MTN Nigeria, according to figures from the NCC has 52 million subscribers; Globacom, 24.3 million; Airtel, 24.1 million; and Etisalat, 15.1 million. How it all beganIn the wake of unending security challenges facing the country, it became expedient that measures needed to be taken.
In 2009, the then Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Engr Ernest Ndukwe, opted for SIM registration as one of the measures. SIM registration is a standard practice in almost all economies of the world for its ability to check phone crimes and, in Nigeria, such crimes, including death threats via text messages and kidnappings, were becoming common.
A meeting between the regulator, operators and other stakeholders were held where government mandated the operators to start registering subscribers. However, it was learnt that the operators expressed inability to do a good job in less than three years, prompting the agreement that they should register new entrants while the regulator finds way of registering existing subscribers. The operators later went on registration of both the new and old subscribers.
The action infuriated the regulator. Then the regulator under the current EVC, Dr Eugene Juwah, presented a budget of N6.1 billion for the exercise. The budget caused some stir at the National Assembly and the telecom sector and created different camps that engaged in claims of whether the bill was justified or not. Eventually, on February 14, 2011, the exercise began.
Campaign Subscribers initially were reluctant to adapt to the new directive and it became clear that something needed to lure them into the exercise. The operators introduced different packages.
Globacom for instance offered reward packages including a guaranteed 30 minutes free airtime (10) minutes per month for 3 months, all expense-paid trip to Manchester or Dubai to 60 registered customers (20 per month for 3 months) and N20,000 airtime to 300 lucky winners(100 per month for 3 months). Meanwhile the company has made over 17 millionaires in the N1m category of the promo.
NCC boss, Juwah Etisalat Nigeria introduced 9ja Free Credit Promo, designed to reward new and existing subscribers who register or have registered their SIM cards. The promo gives a 30 per cent bonus credit to call any network. With consistent text messages ardio jingles and TV commercials, Airtel lured subscribers to register their SIM cards and win a gift. Other operators like Visafone opted for the direct marketing strategy including road shows.
MTN Nigeria embarked on the billionaire promo tagged the BIG Reward programme. Improved turn-out Confirming improved turnout of customers at the SIM registration centres since the launch of the Big Reward, MTN General Manager, Consumer Marketing, Kola Oyeyemi, said,. “That is the overriding objective of the BIG Reward programme; getting subscribers to register so that we can have a credible database of telephone users for our country.
When we have such a database, government can better plan the economy and the people will be the better for it.” Subscribers ask for extension Meanwhile, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers of Nigeria (NATCOMS) has reportedly appealed to the NCC to extend the deadline by another three months to give every subscriber a fair consideration.
The body said several factors have all conspired to prevent many subscribers from complying adequately to the deadline. In a letter to NCC, entitled, “Appeal to NCC for 3-Month One-Way Final Warning on SIM Registration”, NATCOMS alleged that several agents carrying out the SIM registration process employed some sharp practices that discouraged subscribers from registering.
According to part of the letter,: “In the last two to three weeks, reports, issues and concerns reaching us are as follows:
1. During the SIM registration exercise, some umbrella SIM registration agents were not collecting the full details needed because of the rush by the agents to register as many subscribers so as get paid big.
2. Some umbrella SIM registration agents, during the active registration period and even now are asking subscribers to pay N100; a situation that discouraged subscribers.
3. Some umbrella SIM registration agents, even when they are agents of a particular network operator, collect other operators SIM cards for registration in order to shore up the number of SIM cards they register daily.”
4. Some umbrella SIM registration agents copy their daily registered subscribers and give to their colleagues in business as some form of ‘help’ In view of the submissions above, a lot of subscribers will be locked out due to no fault of theirs as they think they have registered their SIM cards.
Against the backdrop of the above and in order to ensure that every subscriber is given fair consideration, we are appealing to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to give subscribers a 3-Month One-Way final warning extension on SIM cards registration. (i.e. subscribers to be able to receive calls).
But Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo, at the weekend, stated that “there will be no extension after this deadline”. He added: “SIM registration has been on for two years now and, on June 30, all unregistered SIMs will be disconnected”.

Lost Your Way? Then Try The Mobile Phone Security Travellers Road Direction Guide

Lost Your Way? Then Try The Mobile Phone Security Travellers Road Direction Guide

Some times, no matter how conversant you are familiar with a place, you may still lose your way, that is if it has been long you visited that particular area. Imagine you getting lost in a city like Lagos where every one seems to be very busy and may not have time to reply your questions when you ask for description.

Beside that, you may not know if you are even talking to the right person or individual or even a ritualist. With your mobile phone, all those worries of you struggling on your location can be minimize. I personally used this service when i lost my way in Portharcourt city about two months ago, and i believe it may be of help to you if you find yourself in such a difficult situation.

This little guide works if you are travelling from any part of Nigeria to any part of the States and you encounter some difficulties to locate the exact location you are heading to. In as much as you have a mobile phone with you, then direction is no problem for you.

This was what i did when i found out i had lost my way in Ph City. I opened the message menu of my phone, typed the location i was heading to, the state i was currently in at that time, and sent this message to 33000. Example, Alekuwodo (space) Osun State and sent to the code 33000. After about 2 to 3 seconds, i received a message on my phone displaying the various address of different locations in Borokiri and that was how i found my way and headed to the correct destination.

All thanks to my black and white mobile phone. Give it a try! i am sure it will work out for you.....Although the service may not be totally free, but it is worth it.

Radiation poses manned Mars mission dilemma

Radiation poses manned Mars mission dilemma

Art work of humans on the surface of Mars A single mission to Mars is going to take the astronauts close to or beyond their current career limits for radiation exposure. Scientists say getting to Mars as quickly as possible would lower the risks
Nasa's Curiosity rover has confirmed what everyone has long suspected - that astronauts on a Mars mission would get a big dose of damaging radiation.
The robot counted the number of high-energy space particles striking it on its eight-month journey to the planet.
Based on this data, scientists say a human travelling to and from Mars could well be exposed to a radiation dose that breached current safety limits.
This calculation does not even include time spent on the planet's surface.
When the time devoted to exploring the world is taken into account, the dose rises further still.
This would increase the chances of developing a fatal cancer beyond what is presently deemed acceptable for a career astronaut.
Cary Zeitlin from the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and colleagues report the Curiosity findings in the latest edition of Science magazine.
They say engineers will have to give careful consideration to the type of shielding that is built into a Mars-bound crew ship. However, they concede that for some of the most damaging radiation particles, there may be little that can be done to shelter the crew other than to get them to Mars and the partial protection of its thin atmosphere and rocky mass as quickly as possible.
At the moment, given existing chemical propulsion technology, Mars transits take months.
"The situation would be greatly improved if we could only get there quite a bit faster," Dr Zeitlin told BBC News.
"It is not just the dose rate that is the problem; it is the number of days that one accumulates that dose that drives the total towards or beyond the career limits. Improved propulsion would really be the ticket if someone could make that work."
New types of propulsion, such as plasma and nuclear thermal rockets, are in development. These could bring the journey time down to a number of weeks.
Curiosity travelled to Mars inside a capsule similar in size to the one now being developed to take astronauts beyond the space station to destinations such as asteroids and even Mars.
Aeroshell separates from cruise stage The rover travelled to Mars tucked inside a protective capsule. Its RAD instrument was turned on for most of the journey
For most of its 253-day, 560-million-km journey in 2011/2012, the robot had its Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD) instrument switched on inside the cruise vessel, which gave a degree of protection.
RAD counts the numbers of energetic particles - mostly protons - hitting its sensors.
The particles of concern fall into two categories - those that are accelerated away from our dynamic Sun; and those that arrive at high velocity from outside of the Solar System.
This latter category originates from exploded stars and the environs of black holes.
These galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) impart a lot of energy when they strike the human body and will damage DNA in cells. They are also the most difficult to shield against.
Earth's thick atmosphere, its magnetic field and its huge rock bulk provide protection to people living on its surface, but for astronauts in deep space even an aluminium hull 30cm thick is not going to change their exposure to GCRs very much.
The RAD data revealed an average GCR dose equivalent rate of 1.84 milliSieverts (mSv) per day during the rover's cruise to Mars. (The Sievert is a standard measure of the biological impacts of radiation.) This dose rate is about the same as having a full-body CT scan in a hospital every five days or so.
Dr Zeitlin and his team used this measurement as a guide to work out what an astronaut could expect on a Mars mission, assuming he or she had a similarly shielded spacecraft, travelled at a time when the Sun's activity was broadly the same and completed the journey in just 180 days - the current best flight time. They calculated the total dose just for the cruise phases to and from Mars to be 0.66Sv. The team promises to come back with the additional number from surface exposure once Curiosity has taken more measurements at its landing location on the planet's equator.
But even this 660mSv figure represents a large proportion of the 1,000mSv for career exposure that several space agencies like to keep their astronauts from approaching. Reaching 1,000mSv is associated with a 5% increase in the risk of developing a fatal cancer. There would likely be neurological impairment and eyesight damage as well.
This should be set against the dangers associated with space travel in general, such as launching on a rocket or trying to land on another planet. It is a dangerous business.
It also needs to be considered in the context of the risks of contracting cancer during a "normal" lifetime on Earth, which is about one-in-four (for a UK citizen).
The space agencies have quite deliberately set conservative limits for their astronauts and they would have to relax their rules somewhat or mitigate the risks in some other way to authorise a Mars mission.
However, the scenario for commercial ventures could be very different. Two initiatives - Inspiration Mars and Mars One - have been announced recently that propose getting people to Mars in the next 10 years using existing technologies.
Privateer astronauts that participate in these projects may regard the extra risks associated with radiation to be an acceptable gamble given the extraordinary prize of walking on the Red Planet.
Dr Kevin Fong is director of the Centre for Space Medicine at University College London, UK, and has written about the dangers associated with space exploration. He said that what Zeitlin and colleagues had done was help remove some of the uncertainty in the risk assessment.
"Radiobiology is actually really tricky because how the body will respond to exposure will depend on many factors, such as whether you're old or young, male or female," he told BBC News.
"What's important about this study is that it characterises the deep space radiation environment for the first time in a vehicle whose shielding is not orders of magnitude different from that which you would expect to put a human crew inside."
Position of RAD instrument on Mars The RAD instrument continues to gather data on the surface of Mars

First pornographic app for Google Glass set to launch 'within days' as adult film directors pledge to explore 'full potential' of the controversial gadget

First pornographic app for Google Glass set to launch 'within days' as adult film directors pledge to explore 'full potential' of the controversial gadget

  • Adult app store MiKandi reportedly confirmed it is already making content
  • Comes after porn directors pledged to explore 'full potential' of technology
  • Likely to be embarrassing revelation for Google over the technology
  • Glass has already been banned in some cafes, cinemas and casinos in U.S.
By Daniel Bates and Amanda Williams

Porn could come to Google Glass as early as this week, with the first X- rated app set to be launched for those who have the £1,000 gadget.
Porn directors last week announced plans to use Google Glass eyewear for X-rated films to explore the 'full potential' of the technology.
Now the Android adult app store MiKandi has reportedly confirmed it is already making content to be viewed on the wearable computer, and it could ready within the next few days.
Excited: Porn directors are looking forward to trying out Google
Glasses as a new way to shoot adult films. Here Google co-founder Sergey

Excited: Porn directors are looking forward to trying out Google Glasses as a new way to shoot adult films. Here Google co-founder Sergey Brin poses in a pair the highly coveted technology
It is likely to be another embarrassing revelation for Google, which has faced somewhat of a backlash over their latest technology.

Cafe owners, cinemas and strip clubs in the US have already announced they are banning the technology from their premises out of respect for customer's privacy.

MiKandi produces hundreds of 'not safe for work' (NSFW) and adult apps.
CNET reports it is seeking to create content with Glass as well as for Glass, and the company said users can expect to see the first Glass app as soon as this week.
MiKandi told ZDNet - CNET sister site: 'Google Glass Porn has been making its rounds, and while studios are intrigued, no one seems to be doing anything about it.

MISSY MARTINEZ .
Porn star Alana Evans, left, says the Google Glasses will spark a huge drive in POV movies while fellow entertainer Missy Martinez believes they lead to a slew of amateur gonzo sex tapes
'So I wanted to let you know that we picked up our Glass and, yup, we're making content for it.'

Chiefs from the adult film industry last week said they were interested in using the wearable computers for point-of-view shots.

They said it would allow them to operate in a 'truly hands-free fashion' as opposed to having one hand on the camera.

GOOGLE'S 'CREEPY' CREATION

Google Glass has caused concern because it has a camera next to the wearer's eye which can take photos or record video without a red light or a shutter sound to tell others that it is working
Casinos said they could help cheaters to win unfairly and cinemas said that they could be used to illegally record films and sell pirate copies.
Parks departments and banks across America are also waiting to see how the new technology is used before deciding whether or not to ban them.
Google's chairman Eric Schmidt once admitted that the aim with technology like Google Glass was to 'go right up to the creepy line and not cross it'.
But the public clearly feels differently and in France those wearing Google Glass style specs have been subjected to 'cyber discrimination'.
University of Toronto computer engineering professor Steve Mann was at a McDonald's restaurant in Paris when he claims an employee tried to physically remove a similar gadget he designed from his head.
Amateur producers are also said to be especially keen to get their hands on a pair as they shoot high quality video and make it even easier to film home porn movie.
Google Glass costs $1,500 a pair and is currently on limited release to 2,000 people.
It will be more widely available later this year or in 2014.
Q Boyer, a spokesman for porn film makers Pink Visual, said last week: 'To really know their full potential, we'll need to get a pair to play around with, but we're already dreaming up ways to use the glasses to get shots (sex-related and otherwise) that just aren't feasible using a traditional camera setup.

'Obviously a device that allows you to shoot high-quality video in a truly hands-free fashion will make shooting point of view (POV) porn that much easier'.
Porn actress Alana Evans has already said it would spark a 'huge drive' in POV filming.
And Missy Martinez, another porn actress, has said it could lead to a slew of 'gonzo-style' movies from amateurs with no experience.
Dave Meinert, the proprietor of the 5 Point Cafe in Seattle, has said the those wearing the specs will have to take them off if they want to come in.
He has placed a sign on the wall which reads: 'Respect our customers' privacy as we'd expect them to respect yours'.
Cinemas have said they do not want the technology as people may be able to film new releases and distribute pirate copies.
And Lap dance clubs said that they would treat those wearing the Internet-connected specs the same as anyone caught filming a stripper with a cameraphone - and would kick them out.

Free Internet Calling

Today we want to consider an important software in the Telecommunication Industry which is known as Skype. Skype helps you make Calls in the Internet, from connecting to friends and meeting new people, video calling and voice calling, but that is not the main case study for today, because Skype has some limitations which you have to pay some money to buy Calling Credit and with this a lot of people have still not yet been able to get a complete freedom in calling even though that they are using the internet, that is why we are introducing to our fans the xSky Software which helps users achieve a lot with Skype either totally free or with a less expenditure.
xSky makes it ridiculously easy to communicate with your list! Write your message, add a Firstname Tag to make it personal, and send it out to thousands of people instantly!
Having a hard time keeping an overview of your Contact List? Skype already has a Category system built into it, however it is very tedious to navigate it.

That's the past however, because xSky gives you perfect overview of your Contacts - Know what Contacts are in what Categories, Add/Remove multiple Contacts to/from Categories, and have all your Categories laid out nicely in front of you. Contact Management is easy with xSky, simply because it should be!

WhatsApp 201 – More How-to’s, Tips and Tricks

WhatsApp 201 – More How-to’s, Tips and Tricks

In our WhatsApp 101 article we covered the basics of WhatApp, here we’ll touch a few topics that weren’t properly covered there or omitted.  So, here we go!
Location Markers
Apart from multimedia WhatsApp allows you send GPS coordinates (i.e. Location Markers) to your contacts. These location markers can be opened with Google Maps. When opened the location of the sender will be indicated on their map, you can save this location or get directions to the location marker using the Google Map interface. This feature comes in handy if you’re organising a small event or just too tired to type directions.
Sending your location is straight forward - during an active chat session, tap the office pin icon on the top right corner of the grey bar and then tap location. Your estimated location will be marked on the preview map for you to see – to improve accuracy make sure you GPS is witched on, then tap send your current location and a location marker will be sent.

Group Chat
WhatsApp has group chat support - this allows you to create a chat group to have real-time discussions with friends and colleagues. From the ‘chats’ homescreen, press the options key then tap ‘New Groups’, you will be promoted to type a group name and an optional picture, tap next in the top right corner on the screen. You will now be prompted to add participants from your WhatsApp contact list. When done, tap Create in the top right corner and your group will e created with all you participants added. To manage the group while in the group chat window, press your options key, the tap ‘group info’ to Add or remove people from the group, change the subject or Delete and exit the group.
How to Tell If you’ve Been Blocked on WhatsApp
When you have been blocked by someone on WhatsApp all incoming messages from that individual will be undelivered. WhatsApp does not notify the blocked party in any way that they have been blocked. There are some symptoms to search for to see if someone has blocked you on WhatsApp,

a.       When you have been blocked by someone via WhatsApp, messages you send to that person will reach the WhatsApp server but will not be delivered to the person who has blocked you. You will notice that your message will be ticked once – indicating the message has been sent, but will be double ticked – indicating the message has been delivered.

b.      When open a chat window to chat with a contact, WhatsApp should give you information in the grey bar about when this person was last online, this information usually loads within a few seconds. If you have been blocked no information will loaded, and the bar will remain blank.

This concludes our WhatsApp course. If you have anything you like added just leave a comment below.
