Ahmadu Bello University Professor Fired For Sexual Harassment

Ahmadu Bello University Professor Fired For Sexual Harassment

A lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Professor David Kolo has reportedly been fired by the University for sexually harassing female students.

This followed the endorsement of the recommendation of a disciplinary committee set up to investigate Professor Kolo of ABU’s faculty of education by the governing council of the university.

Kolo was earlier sentenced to two months imprisonment by a court in Jigawa State, after he was found guilty of attempting to force his female student to accept his sex advances.

The student, who is a married woman, had through her husband informed security agents. An impeccable source, close to the ABU’s governing council, said the council had on Wednesday, during its meeting, approved the dismissal of the professor.

In his reaction to the whole episode, the chairman of ABU-ASUU, Dr. Muhammad Kabir Aliyu, said ASUU is a responsible organization, and as such it frowns at any act that would demean the association.

“I heard about the setting up of the council committee and the invitation extended to the Professor, but I am not a member. We always advise our members not to engage in acts that would demean their character and that of our organization. Therefore, we are not happy with what the Professor did. I am not in town, so, I did not hear about the dismissal.” [360nobs]

Uniuyo Closed Down as 4 Students Die in Protest

The Uniuyo Closed Down as 4 Students Die in ProtestUniversity of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State was closed down on Wednesday for an indefinite period of time as four students were reportedly killed during violent encounter with the police.
It was reported that the students had taken part in a peaceful protest on the campus over the introduction of a new fare regime for the engineering and science students from the town campus to permanent site when the police arrived and allegedly opened fire that claimed lives of the students.
Following the killing of the students, some buildings on the town campus were burnt down last night. These included the office of the Vice Chancellor and that of the Registrar.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, was said to have travelled to Abuja on official engagement when the incident occurred.
Some Principal Officers of the University were reported to have been rescued from their hideouts through the use of ambulance escorted by the Peace on Campus Initiative of the University.
Eyewitness reported that students were seen rushing out from the campus with their bags and valuable items as they were ordered to vacate their hostels immediately.
Sources said trouble escalated when the students broke the rule to move their protest outside the school premises. They reportedly met a stiff resistance from security operatives at the Ikot Ekpene-Ikpa road round about.
In the violent confrontation, the police were said to have moved in with about15 Hilux vans fully loaded with armed police. They reportedly opened fired and threw tear gas canisters on the students which resulted in the death of the four students.
The school authority, it was gathered recently announced a new fare of N200 per day to convey students from the town campus to the permanent site with effect from yesterday through private consultancy arrangement.
Some of the students who spoke with the reporters said they were not comfortable with some of polices being implementation in the school. A final year law student who didn’t want his name in print said the police came in during the peaceful protest to shoot sporadically which led to the death of the students.  He said: “We were not armed but police came with all sorts of ammunition in a peaceful protest embarked upon by the students.”
A 300 level engineering student lamented the increase in fare which he said was not adequately communicated to the students. He noted: “Even the vehicles were not even available when the school authority began to harass students over payment. The matter is that we do not want this VC any more. Federal Government should look for a more competent hand to govern the affairs of the school.
“How can we pay N200 for the Federal Government intervention vehicle? It is not done. We are not going to accept this.”
The Chief Security Officer, Col. Nyong (rtd) who was chased out from the campus admitted that school management brought in a private consultant to handle student transportation from the town campus to the permanent site but at the rate of N100.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Etim Dickson confirmed the riot in the University and denied knowledge of the death of any student. According to him, the situation is not clear as to what is going on in the campus as the police are not allowed to enter inside the school.
He added: “We are outside to prevent escalation of the protest. We are aware of the demonstration, but we don’t have authorization to enter campus.”

I'm told it all started after the students waged a peaceful protest earlier on today to complain about the transportation problem they were having at the school.

On arrival at the Vice Chancellor's office, the security officials there tried to stop the students from seeing the Vice Chancellor.
Things got out of hand, students were throwing stones at security, police was called in, the protest escalated into a riot.

The police who were supposed to come and calm the situation fired shots at the students, allegedly killed one, injured three. Supposed picture of the dead student is after the cut.

The students angrily set the office of the V.C on fire and destroyed school property.

Too Hot For School: Teenager Sent Home From School Because Her Breasts Are Too Big.

A TEENAGER claims she was turned away from her high school prom because her “oranges” are too big.
Brittany Minder had spent months looking forward to the end-of-term dance at Central Kitsap High School in Washington State. The 18-year-old even traveled to Canada to find her dream dress for the posh do.
But when she arrived at the prom, staff refused to let her in, claiming Brittany’s purple frock showed off too much cleavage.
School regulations ban outfits that expose “cleavage, midriff and lower back”. But Brittany claims the rule’s unfair on her – because she struggles to hide her big chest. She said: “In my opinion, I feel that it is because I’m bigger chested and there is more cleavage that you can see, and there’s nothing I could really do about that.” Her angry dad Gary added: “It was blatant from the start that the school was not being fair in how they were enforcing that rule.

“A girl like Brittany should not have to go to a dance in a burlap sack because she’s large busted. It’s ridiculous.” Mum Kim added: “All women are not created equal, and you cannot compare a golf ball to a grapefruit. It ain’t gonna happen,”

Randy DELSU Lecturer Allegedly Caught In The Act, stri*ped Of Clothes

Randy DELSU Lecturer Allegedly Caught In The Act, stri*ped Of Clothes

MR. IFEANYI UGWU RAPHAEL POSING WITH HIS STUDENT’S EXAMINATION SHEET

In a classic display of low moral standards among some lecturers in Nigeria’s higher institutions, Mr Ifeanyi Ugwu Raphael, a lecturer in the department of Theatre Arts, Delta State University, Abraka was at the weekend allegedly caught in one of his female student’s room in a s*x-for-marks scandal.

Information Nigeria gathered that the 400 level student (name withheld) of Theatre Arts was carrying over Mr Ifeanyi’s course ‘THA 203’ and in a bid to lure her to sleep with him, promised to upgrade her scores.

It was further learnt that the student’s refusal to accede to her lecturer’s amorous desire was the reason she has been failing the course since her second year.

Sources who narrated the events leading to the randy lecturer’s exposure and show of shame, said last Friday, Mr Ifeanyi, who is working towards earning his Ph.D degree from same university, had gone to see his student with the understanding that he will come along with her exam scripts and after sleeping with her, upgrade the scores immediately.

However, unknown to him, the student had her own game plan. It was learnt that she had arranged with her male friends and neighbours to barge into her room whose door she left unlocked once she has gotten Mr Ifeanyi undressed.

The girl’s plan worked out and Ifeanyi was dragged out without any clothes on with the help of her neighbours and male friends.

Realising his game was up and the damaging effect it would have on his career, the lecturer pleaded and asked for forgiveness but the now angry group insisted on taking their pound of flesh as he was molested and told to pose for photographs as evidence of his misdeeds.

According to some students of the Theatre Arts department who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of being victimized, they said the lecturer was in the habit of blackmailing his female students into sleeping with him just as they accused him of often bragging of being untouchable because he purportedly belongs to a dreaded confraternity on campus.

The students added that for male students who fail Ifeanyi’s course, they are forced to part with five thousand (5,000) or risk carrying over the same course.

Reacting to the allegation when contacted, Mr Ifeanyi said he had nothing to say as the school authority is handling the case.

Female Students Barred From Wearing Bra to Exam Halls

Female Students Barred From Wearing Bra to Exam Halls

bra

More than nine million students packed exam halls across China for the opening day of the country’s university entrance exam on Friday —with attempts to stop cheating even leading to bans on metal bra clasps.

Students in the northeastern province of Jilin were banned from wearing clothing with metal parts and education authorities installed metal detectors in exam centres to clamp down on “wireless cheating devices”, the state-run Global Times reported.

Authorities have become increasingly concerned about the risk of examinees using devices such as smartphones — some of which have become smaller and easier to hide — as an illicit aid during tests.

Around 9.12 million high school students were registered across China to sit the crucially important two-day exam, known as the gaokao, reports have quoted the education ministry as saying.

Officials aimed to crack down on “sales of high-tech gear for cheating, and gaokao-related fraud”, the Global Times said.

Some measures to ensure students reach the annual test on time can be extreme. Pictures posted online showed an amphibious fire engine ploughing through water to deliver a boy dressed in school uniform to the exam in a remote part of Inner Mongolia.

The southern city of Guangzhou introduced dedicated lanes for vehicles taking students to the gaokao, local media said, while parents in China’s business hub of Shanghai booked taxis a week in advance for their children.

Parents across the country visited temples to make offerings for their children’s success, the Global Times said, while others were shown waiting outside exam rooms with food and drink specially prepared for their children.

The test has come under fierce criticism on China for putting enormous pressure on students, and as a symbol of educational inequality, with many low-income students whose parents have migrated to cities barred from taking the exam in their new homes.

I’ve Never Kissed a Man in My Life – Babcock’s Best Graduating Student

I’ve Never Kissed a Man in My Life – Babcock’s Best Graduating Student

Oduyoye
Oduyoye

The 11th convocation of the Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State recorded a mixed grill of emotions.

Last Sunday’s convocation of Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State, was a potpourri of emotions. For some, it was expectedly exciting. Shouts of joy, mixed with backslapping and hugging, were not in short supply.

But while most of the graduating students had cause to rejoice and shed tears of joy, two of the graduating students and their family members, who managed to grace the occasion, were grief-stricken. But, first, they story of joy.

At the carnival-like 11th convocation, 1,359 students were awarded first degrees. Twenty got postgraduate diplomas, 71 obtained Master’s degrees in various disciplines while another set of 41 got PhD degrees in various disciplines.

The cynosure of all eyes were,  however, a 20-year-old lady, Omobola Oduyoye, who emerged the best graduating student after scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.92,  and Nuhu Benjamin, who won the President’s Award for securing the overall best performances in leadership, academics, community and spiritual services.

Oduyoye, an indigene of Ilisan-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state, was awarded a first class degree in Public Health, while Nuhu also got a first degree in Christian Religious Studies.

Speaking with our correspondent after she received the Senior Vice-President’s Prize as the graduate with the highest overall CGPA, Oduyoye said commitment, discipline, hard work and focus – combined with what she called God’s grace – fetched her the award.

“Motivation from my parents, lecturers and course mates also helped me. Healthy competition from my course mates such as Akomolafe Damilola, who also obtained a CGPA of 4.60 , also enhanced my performance.

“I have a lot of respect for her because she is a mature married woman and a nurse. In spite of her age, she related well with us and she was very focused. Each time I looked at her, I felt like I should ask government to stop admitting fresh secondary school leavers straight into the university. They should be asked to do the A/Level or ordinary diploma programme before they enrol at the university,” she said.

Oduyoye,  who aspires to become the nation’s health minister some day, noted that she would change the face of the nation’s health sector, particularly child and maternal health if given the chance.

“I’m from this town. I only lived the first six years of my life in Ghana and since then I’ve been here and I see a lot of challenges poor women and children go through daily. I want to make health delivery accessible, affordable and extremely cheap for our children and women. I will fight corruption in the health sector and ensure that our children and their mother don’t die again from preventable diseases,” she added.

This desire could explain why each time she and her colleagues  had to embark on a field work, Oduyoye always ensured that children and young mothers were her target.

“Though I don’t have money to give them, I always organise seminar and workshop to train them on hygiene, oral health and how to handle preventable diseases. We at times give them off-the-counter drugs. But if God permits and I become the health minister, I’ll work hard to ensure better health service delivery for Nigerians,” she noted.

On how she handled pressure from male students and lecturers, Oduyoye, who had her primary and secondary school education at Babcock Primary School and Babcock University High School, stated that though she had so many male friends, she avoided getting intimate with them.

“I have a number of friends – including male students but I always draw a line between friendship for academic advancement and immoral relationship. I’m not abusive; neither am I a snub. But I don’t encourage any relationship that will distract me from my studies. I don’t encourage any action that can suggest to you that I’m a cheap commodity. I also ensure that I don’t go alone anywhere or follow anybody to dark corners even if she is a girl like me.

“It may sound funny to you, I have never kissed anyone in my life and I have not been kissed by anybody. I thank God for the grace He gives me to achieve this because I know that some people will say it is not easy but with God all things are possible,” the 20-year-old fresh graduate added.

Oduyoye advised young girls to abstain from sex, face their studies and respect people and honour God. But the lady, whose father is a lecturer in the Business Administration Department at Babcock, has a word for the management of the institution.

She stated,  “They should relax the rules. Specifically, I don’t see any reason why a female student should not keep long hairs. Do you know it is so bad that security men on campus can stop a student and cut off her hair? This is not good. After all,  undergraduates are no longer in the secondary school.”

Oduyoye however urged the university to sustain its dress code, though she wants students to be forced into engaging in physical activities. This, she said, is based on the result of a research she did in her final year.

“I did a project on the effect of physical inactivity among Babcock University students and my findings revealed that many of us were not physically active and this has implication for our academics, health and general wellbeing. The university should therefore invest more in sports and possibly compel everybody to participate in sports.

“They should also reduce the sale of fatty foods such as hamburger, doughnut, eggroll and meat-pie on campus. The scriptural and inspirational write ups on billboards in open spaces on campus are good but they should add educational health tips too,” she  noted.

The former Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke,  was honoured with the honoraris causa of the institution for his distinguished public service works. He gave a lecture where he advised African leaders to work for the development of their people.

He also challenged the graduating students never to emulate corrupt leaders but to be passionate and committed to their vision.

Earlier, Makinde had told the gathering,  including the Chancellor, BU, Pastor Gilbert Wari; the institution’s Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Oyeleke Owolabi; representative of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi; and vice-chancellors of some Nigerian universities, that as is the tradition with the citadel, none of the graduating students had Third Class degree.

It was learnt that students whose CGPA was within the third class degree were given automatic extra year. According to Makinde, the institution is committed to its mission to produce graduates that  have competence, character and commitment.

He told the gathering that all the programmes on offer in the institution had been accredited by the NUC. He also commended philanthropists,  including Chief Kessignton Adebutu, Dr. Alex Otti and Alhaji Aliko Dangote, for their contributions towards the development of the university.

… as another graduating student loses 8 family members

Margaret Okwuikpo, who graduated with a second class upper degree in Nursing, was one of the two that could not help shedding bitter tears at the Babcock’s graduation. The lady had lost eight family members in a road crash on Friday, two days to her graduation.

It was learnt that 11 people, including Okwuikpo’s parents, brothers and sisters and her sister-in-law,  had an accident shortly after they left Port-Harcourt for the convocation in Ilisan-Remo.

“Eight of the occupants of the vehicle, including Okwuikpo’s parents, her brother and his wife and their eight-month-old baby, died on the spot,” a source close to the family told our correspondent.

A man, who claimed to be Okwuikpo’s relations, said he could not talk to the press. The lady herself was not stable when our correspondent attempted to speak to her.

The correspondent’s telephone call to the university source,  with a view to speaking with Okwuikpo, yielded no fruit, as she was said to have left for Port Harcourt on Monday morning.

However, another graduating student, simply identified as Tochi, also lost her father in the same accident.
Another university source, who claimed that Tochi’s brother works at Babcock, said he (the brother) was also too devastated to speak on the issue.

In the course of the ceremony, before it was the turn of the graduating students of her department to mount the rostrum to shake hands with the institution’s principal officers, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Makinde, Okwuikpo had controlled her emotions. But she soon started crying and collapsed on the podium as soon as she walked towards Makinde, Her friend and course mate, Rabiu Sakirat, who was right beside her, could only help in wiping off her tears.

Those who did not know what the matter was were confused.

“Why is she weeping?” a woman beside our correspondent asked rhetorically.

“Perhaps, she remembered her relation who might have been part of those who died in the ill-fated Dana crash a year ago,” another man, who had come to celebrate with her niece, said.

But silence fell upon the hitherto cheerful crowd when it was learnt that the grieving lady had lost her parents two days to her convocation. The institution’s Sports Complex, venue of the convocation, suddenly became a temporary hall of mourning. Parents, students and well wishers shared in the lady’s low moment, with some putting their hands on their heads while others just sighed.

Like a pastor, Makinde rose to the occasion, held Okuikpo’s hands and consoled her. Tochi and her mother were also called to the rostrum where they were  prayed for. But efforts to speak with the mourning families were unsuccessful as a man who identified himself as Okuikpo’s relation said they were not in the mood to speak to the press about the sad incident.
